PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Silvio Pellico school is a lower secondary school and it was designed by studio Valle in precast concrete technology in the seventies.
Through a depth analysis of the existing building conditions and the real needs of the administration and the school users, we identified the critical issues and we developed an innovative action plan. The aim of the project was to provide high living standards and comfort with low energy consumption. Our replicable retrofitting strategy transforms the school in a Near Zero Energy Building (NZEB).
The two different buildings of the school and the gym, that form the school complex, are connected by a raised hallway at the first floor. The school volume includes classrooms, workshops and also an auditorium, that is accessible both from the inside of the building and from the garden to guarantee its use in afterschool time.
From the technical point of view, we replace the existing prefabricated casing with sustainable CLT panels, mechanical assembled to the RC frame structure. This solution reduced the construction time and contributes to the building energy performance.
The entire existing building plant have been removed and replaced with more efficiency HVAC systems, to greatly reduce the consumption. Additionally, 210 photovoltaic panels have been installed on the green roof: they produce the 80% of the school energy consumption.
The new Silvio Pellico school is a contemporary and functional building, open to the urban and social context that satisfy the users demand with a sustainable approach.

SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY
The project consists in a retrofitting action on the existing building, energetically insufficient before the intervention.
The existing prefabricated casing with cross-laminated timber panels, which were mechanical dry-assembled to
the RC frame structure. This building solution has enabled a significant improvement of the air-tightness and the thermal wave phase shifting (U=0,159W/m2K). The mineral wool thermal insulation covers the entire building, starting from the inward insulation of the concrete slab with 100mm of polyurethane foam (U=0,133W/m2K).
The existing windows were replaced with thermally-broken aluminium windows with double glazing units, low air permeability and solar factor 0,6. The building was also provided with solar shades to protect the indoor areas against the solar radiation and further minimise the building energy consumption in summer.
The green roof (U=0,209W/m2K) aims to enlarge the permeable surface of the area and to improve the energy performances of the roof.
The upgrade of the plant system contributes to achieve the N-Zeb qualification. The whole existing plant system has been dismissed and replaced with more energy efficient ones, that guarantees low energy consumption.
The photovoltaic system on the roof supplies the energy need of the building: 210 photovoltaic panels, 67,2 kWp in total (+10% beyond the norm).
A new heating/cooling system (type VRV-VRF) was fitted, for a total of 5 external units complete with heat-reclaim system and thermostat, and interlinked to the BMS system for a closer control of the temperature and energy consumption.
New boilers, for the production of the domestic hot water, are coupled with roof-top heat pumps and fitted with carbon dioxide probe in order to modulate the introduction of outside air and reduce the energy consumption.
