PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Life Sciences Incubator, Utrecht Science Park

With its wide variety of distinct buildings, the Utrecht Science Park is a microcosm of modern architecture. To fit into its surroundings, Mecanoo has designed the new Life Sciences Incubator (LSI) with horizontal layers, while the detailed glazed facade adds a unique touch.
Behind its striking glazed facade, the building houses an inviting and flexible work environment with both laboratories and offices. The efficient use of space allows LSI to adapt to the changing needs of its users, both start-ups and publicly traded companies in the bioscience field, now and in the future.

LSI is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund of the European Union, and contributions from the City of Utrecht and the Province of Utrecht. Utrecht University and Utrecht Holdings are founding partners of the LSI.


Accessibility, flexibility, and efficiency
LSI is a business centre for start-ups and more established companies in the bioscience field and consists of both laboratories and offices. Accessibility, flexibility and efficiency have been central in developing a building with a professional, functional appearance. To accommodate future change in the number of participating companies in LSI, the building is designed to use space efficiently.

Bridges and staircases
A special feature in the design is the light and airy central atrium. An ensemble of bridges and staircases housing integrated meeting spots have been designed to encourage interdisciplinary cooperation.

“Sustainability is intertwined with the integrated architectural concept for LSI. The distinctive angled façade is an innovative design solution that provides the basis for the energy concept, whilst giving the building a recognisable profile and very spacious interior.”

The tilted triple glazed window panes act as a natural sun and heat protector. The façade is built up of panels combining glazing with recyclable composite material, both of which positively impact the life cycle costs in relation to replacement, maintenance and durability. The integrated architectural approach has resulted in a BREEAM-NL “Outstanding” design certificate for LSI.

Skylights in the roof flood the atrium with natural light, resulting in a welcoming central area. Walkways and staircases zigzag through the atrium, forming shortcuts between different departments. Meeting spaces situated where walkways intersect promote collaboration between the users of the incubator.

SUSTAINABILITY AND BREEAM GREEN BUILDING CERTIFICATION

Outstanding sustainability score
The integrated architectural concept of the Life Sciences Incubator (LSI) at Utrecht Science Park has resulted in a BREEAM-NL “Outstanding” design certificate. The LSI is the first laboratory building in The Netherlands to achieve this rating. Mecanoo together with GiesbersWijchen have found the optimal balance between highly advanced building services technologies and basic architectural principles to supersede the ambitions of the University of Utrecht, the client.

The 6,200m2 building has a joint entrance with the existing Alexander Numan Building, the incubator complex next door. Analysing the sustainability score and life cycle costs for each design decision has resulted in an integrated design.

DAYLIGHT and SKYLIGHTS
LSI is a transparent and inviting building. The slanted facade with solar control glazing acts as a natural sun and heat block.

SUSTAINABLE BUILDING MATERIALS
All indoor finishes are carefully chosen in order to enhance people’s health and wellbeing in the building while minimising the environmental impact of the building materials. Indoor finishes with very low or zero volatile organic compound emissions are adopted. Using sustainable materials positively impacts the life cycle costs. The use of glass panels with recyclable composite material, for example, reduces the costs for replacement and maintenance.
