PROJECT DESCRIPTION

At the Bourse de Commerce, Ando […] has placed a concrete cylinder nine metres high by thirty metres round, whose function is to create an exhibition space, but also to form an abstract kernel at the heart of the building, in the rotunda, from the ground to the second floor. Between the external wall of the cylinder and the inner wall, stairs accompany the movement and lead to the various levels.

On the second floor, a passageway runs around the cylinder. It provides a fresh view of the glass ceiling and the decor at the base of the cupola, painted in 1889 by five artists and depicting French trade across the continents. The third floor contains a restaurant with a view over Paris, the Jardin Nelson Mandela and its surroundings. In the basement, the auditorium is there for the organisation of talks, concerts, projections and encounters.

SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY

The Bourse de Commerce by 28 September 2020, successfully achieved High Environmental Quality (HQE™) Sustainable Building 2016 “Excellent” level and BREEAM® International Refurbishment and Fit-Out “Very good" rating.

Re-Used Materials and Circular Economy
In order to reduce the environmental impact and limit the waste of resources, the project has, as far as possible, undertaken to reuse materials and make use of a circular economy, first on the site, but also through the donation of two generators from the existing building to an association.

Low environmental impact construction site
A wide range of methods and approaches have been put in place (acoustic and vibration monitoring, waste traceability, choice of ISO 14001 materials) to ensure the site meets the objectives of certification in this domain. The social component has also been developed with the recruitment of workers on integration and inclusion schemes. The site managed to exceed the objectives of the certification by 8%.

Prioritizing access
One of the main objectives of the renovation and transformation of the Bourse de Commerce building was to create a space open to all and suitable for visitors with reduced mobility, as well as people with visual and hearing impairments. In order to go beyond regulation alone, the Bourse de Commerce has chosen to privilege the “accessibility component” of the HQE™ BD 2016 certification and the criteria for the accessibility label developed by Certivéa. However, some of these criteria could not be implemented as a result of the constraints relating to this historic monument.

Energy efficiency
Through its connection to the CPCU and Climespace networks, on the one hand, and through the work undertaken in this domain on the other hand, the Bourse de Commerce has significantly reduced the environmental impact of its energy consumption. The restoration of the oak frames, the installation of double-glazing, even on the glass roof, along with the complete renovation of the roof and its insulation, have all contributed to improving the building’s energy performance.

A greater acoustic comfort
The Bourse de Commerce has a rather particular acoustic identity, particularly in the vast Rotunda space, where the reverberation of sounds is quite significant, especially before its transformation.
To ensure acoustic comfort and quality, the Bourse de Commerce has adapted certain technical solutions, while respecting the architectural approach and requirements specific to the conservation and restoration of heritage buildings. For example, the Auditorium built under the Rotunda integrates Schroeder diffusers and acoustic curtains to adapt to various conference formats and musical performances. The exhibition galleries benefit from controlled acoustics, whereas the monumental Rotunda, while retaining its specific acoustic identity, manages to limit the reverberation through the concrete cylinder by incorporating Helmholtz resonators that absorb sound.
