Strategic partnership to develop green building in INDIA

20 October 2014, 05:37 |

Recently, USGBC and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) formed a strategic partnership to accelerate the development of green buildings in India.

Specifically the partenership will focus on :

  • Create a green community: We want to deliver on a mutually-shared vision of bringing green buildings and communities to all, especially in India, within a generation. Jointly, we are working together on all aspects of sustainable development. LEED and GRIHA, with their longstanding presences in India, allow us to take the conversation of green buildings to a much higher platform. As tools of market transformation, LEED and GRIHA will become even more available to the broader public.
  • Performance: What you cannot measure is not manageable. We will be measuring building performance at the building, community and human health levels. How we build performance metrics into the market is critical. Our new LEED Dynamic Plaque allows us to calibrate each building on its real-time performance to further drive the market. While there are many efforts in progress to measure performance, our approach is to keep things simple so that the common man can understand and influence the metric. After all, behavioral transformation is key to success.
  • Capacity building: Simply put, there’s not enough capacity in the market to absorb all we are pushing.  It’s not just about quantity. It needs to be about quality. Those two are essential. This is why we want to continue empowering the existing leaders in India to help us in this effort. Education is a key anchor to our new partnership. Providing education to a new generation of leaders, teaching them the concepts of sustainable design standards and how are built environment impacts human health will allow people to live healthy and beneficial lives.  We want to start early and grow quickly.
