San Francisco General Hospital earthquake resistant building design

Arup pushes forward the boundary of the building construction technology and earthquake engineering, designing the most advanced seismic resistant hospital building able to withstand large earthquakes. The well-known engineering firm is honoured by SEAONC with a prestigious Award of Excellent.

Priscilla and Mark Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (SFGH) is one of the city’s busiest emergency and trauma centre, comprising 13 buildings spread across a 23-acre campus. Arup has been working closely with the San Francisco Department of Public Works, Fong & Chan Architects and Webcor Builders to add a new 41,600sqm (448,000ft2) acute care facility.

The SFGH, which seeks LEED Gold certification, is envisaged to consume 40% less water and 20% less energy compared to similar buildings, through a combination of sustainable strategies, water conservation methods and energy efficiency measures. The design focuses particularly on the maximisation of daylighting within all the areas of the hospital. The exterior lighting was instead designed to provide a safe and pleasant exterior lighting while meeting the rigorous LEED requirements to reduce light pollution.

“…a world-class, seismically safe, technologically advanced, and sustainably built hospital for all San Franciscans” said Ed Lee, Mayor of San Francisco.
The construction opened to public in Spring 2016.
