Scotland can go 100% renewable by 2030

Scotland could be powered almost entirely by renewables by 2030, without the need for any gas, coal or nuclear power stations, according to a report recently published by WWF Scotland. 

 

‘Pathways to Power: Scotland’s route to clean, renewable, secure electricity by 2030’, which is based on analysis by energy consultancy DNV GL, says that the Scottish government’s 2030 de-carbonisation target is high risk because it is based on “unproven” carbon capture and storage (CCS), which are not guaranteed to be implemented in time.

 

However, “with moderate efforts to reduce demand for electricity”, Scotland can be an almost entirely renewables-based system. The report says that the current pipeline of renewables will be “more than adequate to hit the decarbonisation target and allow for substantial export of electricity to the rest of Great Britain”, especially if Scotland makes progress on energy efficiency.
