LEED Platinum goal set for a new higher educational complex in Boston

28 March 2015, 05:34 |

Arup is working on the development of a new campus district for the esteemed Boston, MA  university. First up in this new district is the 20,500sqm (220,000ft2) Interdisciplinary Science & Engineering Complex (ISEC), designed to be a high-performance sustainable laboratory. The project, which abuts the Ruggles Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) station, initiates the university’s expansion of academic facilities across the rail lines to Columbus Avenue.
The complex will contain four academic research disciplines for engineering, health sciences, basic sciences, and computer science, and will refine the university’s collaborative research culture.
The ISEC laboratory building is being designed to achieve LEED Platinum certification.

Thanks to an integrated design process involving the architect and owner, supported by a detailed annual energy simulation of the building, the project surpasses the requirement of the Massachusetts Stretch Energy Code adopted by the City of Boston, which requires that all new buildings perform 20% better than base code. The energy conservation measures include cascade air systems, heat recovery chillers, and chilled beam technology measures and have helped produce a building that reaches a 40% energy reduction. This achieves the maximum LEED credits, helping push the new building target to LEED Platinum.
