Herzog and de Meuron’s proposal for a new Stamford Bridge stadium gets planning approval by Hammersmith & Fulham council.
Plans comprises the demolition of the current stadium and the construction of a new larger football facility with a 60,000-seat capacity along with a club shop, a museum, restaurants and coffee shops.
The Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron, the company behind the design of the London’s Tate Modern, has already completed tremendous stadium projects worldwide including the Allianz Arena in Germany, the National Stadium in China, the Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux in France and the St. Jakob Park in Switzerland.
“Pierre and I have always admired traditional English stadiums because of their specific atmosphere and history. Stamford Bridge has a rich history and is located at the core of a vibrant neighbourhood. Unlike an isolated stadium, it is part of the day to day life of the local community” said Jacques Herzog.
In the absence of BREEAM Bespoke criteria being set up for the development, the sustainability and environmental impact of the new stadium are being assessed by using BREEAM New Construction 2014.
The design team will now need to obtain the full set of permissions before work can begin on site. The Chelsea Stadium redevelopment is expected to be completed in time for 2021-22 season.
