Fresh vegetables that last forever. Can you believe it?

04 May 2015, 09:21 |

Supermarket chains keep promising great value for world class goods and to ensure us that what we buy from them is heathy and high quality food. What a great marketing statement! Isn’t it?  In real life, the food we buy from food stores is, sometimes, miles away from the above definition. That’s why we would like to share our concern about fresh food that “last forever”.

As many of you, leaving in busy downtowns, we, the Ongreening team, daily visit our nearby supermarket store to buy food. Unfortunately, farm markets are not available in our area, so we have to get our “perfect looking” vegetables and fruits from the shelves of large food stores.

Some weeks ago we bought a package of fresh and crunchy mangetout from one of UK largest supermarket chains available in the area.
Some days later, we realised that the vegetable were expired while experiencing their comfortable stay in our fridge. What a shame! They were still looking as perfect and crisp as the day we brought them from the food store.

This immediately reminded us about an experiment we carried out sometimes years ago with an iceberg lettuce which ended up to last for more than 2 months without showing any sign of deterioration. As a result, we decided to keep the mangetouts in our fridge and to regularly record the status of the vegetables to see how long the mangetout can last. Since then we have been taking pictures with our IPhone every couple of days.

Vegetable under investigation: Series of snapshots of the package of mangetout taken several days after the expiration date (actual date of photograph is shown below each picture).

By the time I writing this article, the mangetouts are still there, in the fridge!  After more than 7 weeks from the expiration date, the experiment is still on our, and our vegetables still look GREEN & CRUNCHY!!!
We will keep testing our “extra-terrestrial” vegetables and give you regularly updates.

We will keep you informed about the long life mangetouts and other interesting topics about sustainability
