BREEAM New Standard Announcement

10 February 2015, 07:22 |

BRE has announced that it will reveal a New Homes Standard at Ecobuild 2015. Here is the link to the full announcement

It has been created to replace the scrapped Code for Sustainable Homes. After speaking to many assessors in the industry, I found that it created a sense of uncertainty in the market. Does this announcement come as a relief to you?

The New Homes Standard covers issues which are critical to the design and operation of a high quality home, including low energy, low water costs, improved resource efficiency, improved connectivity and better health and well-being for occupants. Do you think the standard covers enough areas? Could it go further?

In theory the new standard will allow householders to make choices over their financial outgoings, their impact on the environment and health and wellbeing. It will bring increased certainty over the whole construction process for developers. It will provide policy makers with a national framework to progress with current challenges within the market and help drive employment and innovation.

Many in the market have said that this non-mandatory scheme won’t be backed enough until there is proper legislation brought in.

It will be interesting to see how these changes affect the industry, especially in reducing the air of uncertainty throughout the market at the moment. What are your views on this recent announcement? Do you think it will work to an advantage or to a disadvantage? Do you think it will have a big effect on the market?
